Configuring a Proxy Server in a ITDS Environment

IBM Tivoli Directory Server (ITDS) is IBM’s LDAP server. If you have any IBM applications (Websphere, Lotus, Tivoli, Rational, etc) in your environment there is a good chance you’re running this. It’s part of IBM’s middleware stack (Websphere Application Server, ITDS, and DB2) and they leave very little room for compatibility with other brands.

In 6.0 of ITDS, they introduced a proxy server. The main feature of the proxy server is scalability. It does this by distributing directory entries over a set of directory servers, instead of a single server.

I get a lot of requests for setting up proxy servers. I’m finding many of these are due to people having a hard time figuring out IBM’s documentation. To help simplify the process I’m going to show how I configured a proxy server with a back end server in a AIX environment.

In my example, I’m going to have two instances (proxy and back end) on a single AIX 5.3 system and I’ll be using ITDS 6.0 FP7. I start off by creating a instance for the back end, load it with sample data, and then I will configure the proxy.

Setup Apache, PHP, and Mysql in Mac OSX Leopard

I don’t consider myself a web developer by any means. But I do have multiple web sites and I like to play around with the latest web applications (WordPress, Concrete5, Drupal, etc) that come out. I have learned over the years not to use my live servers for testing or playing around. So I have setup a test environment on my local Mac OSX system. I want to show you how I setup Apache, PHP, and Mysql on my Mac (Some refer to it as MOXAMP or MAMP) for handling the development of my websites.

One of my favorite features in Mac OSX Leopard is the inclusion of Apache and PHP. It helps in getting a environment set up pretty quickly. The only thing that is not included but very important is Mysql. By default Apache and PHP are inactive and need to be enabled by you.

I’m On a Boat by Lonely Island

Lonely Island’s ‘Jizz in My Pants’ video was probably the funniest thing to come out of 2008. Definitely the best thing to come out of SNL. Yes, even better than Will Ferrell (he’s just dropping the ball). The trio are answering my prayers and releasing a CD on February 10th titled ‘Incredibad’. It will include several SNL Digital Short classics (Dick in a Box, Jizz in My Pants, Lazy Sunday, and more) as well as some new songs.  Thanks to Mike, my BIL, I came across this song  ‘I’m On a Boat’ featuring T-Pain. Normally I try to avoid anything that involves T-Pain, as well as all those other autotuning fools. But I couldn’t turn away from this.

There is some sad news to report. The ‘Iran So Far’ song Andy Samberg did with Adam Levine won’t be making the cut for ‘Incredibad’ because the couldn’t secure rights to the Aphex Twins sample used in the song. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well here you go, yo!

Brighter by The Boxing Lesson

Last Summer I got the chance to look over my friend Victor’s shoulder while he filmed his first music video. The video was for a local Austin band, The Boxing Lesson. He was doing the entire video in stop motion. Being the huge fan of stop motion that I am, I couldn’t pass up the invite to watch and help out if needed. It was an awesome experience to see this bad ass at work.

He showed me a 17 second teaser clip in August and I was blown away. I couldn’t wait to see the whole thing. Well the video has been done for a few months now and I find myself watching it quite often. Check out the video for The Boxing Lesson’s Brighter.

25 Random Things

I have a confession. I’m a sucker for those stupid lists that get passed around on facebook and myspace. You know the ones I’m talking about. They warn that you will die a horrible death if you don’t re-post it and pass it to X amount of friends. Even though I know how stupid these things are I can’t resist filling them out. The latest one I got was on facebook asking about 25 random things about you. I thought I would share that with everyone.

1. My eye sight is extremely horrible…5.00 and 4.75 (for cause: see #7)

2. I once got hit in the face with a clog for making fun of a girl’s hairy arms (I’m talking HAIRY!) then she ripped out some hair that jumpstarted my receding hairline. I got the last laugh because I shaved off all my hair! She would just look weird if she shaved off her arm hair. freak!

3. I’m having a hard time adjusting to cold weather

4. I have a dimple in my chest.

5. I’m not a big fan of porn…I know! It’s weird.

6. One of my favorite movies is Transformers The Movie (Not the Michael Bay car commercial, the 1986 cartoon)

7. I’m a chronic masturbator…like 5 times just to finish this.

8. I want to race the Baja 1000 on a motorcycle.

9. I’m hoping for a 2010 motorcycle trip through Mongolia.

10. I’m super sensitive…just good at hiding it…ok not really. But I like to think I am. Hiding it that is.

11. I have a HUGE fear of public speaking, but enjoy the hell out of it after the pukey feeling resides.

12. I used to be a pyromaniac. I have burn scars on three fingers from filling up a big pretzel bottle with hairspray and lighting it. Prior to that, I almost caught our house of fire by throwing burning paper into a plastic garbage can, and, the big one, I lit a fire in a rusted trash can and it got huge. In a state of panic I knocked over the can and the entire field caught fire. It was a really large field.

13. I’m cutting things out of my life that are distractions from actually enjoying life (tv,games,etc,etc)
