With our move to Raleigh right around the corner, it’s time to start working on the to-do list. The list is going to help keep track of things we love to do or haven’t done since living here. I would hate to leave Austin and say “Damn! I got forgot to…” or “Man, I wish we would have…”.
Most of the things I’m going to miss about Austin are food related. I looovvve me some food. From the places I’ve visited, it’s the most diverse in food selection. Being here, I’ve been able to experience a variety of food from different ethnicities. Some of it I will never try again (menudo) and some I could eat everyday of the week (everything other than menudo).
Talking with other people, it sounds like Austin is not as diverse as other places. Well, Duh! There is always going to be somewhere more diverse in food selection. For me, that’s the fun in traveling. One person I spoke with swore Houston has the most selection they’ve seen. Maybe this is true, but Houston is like the sweaty ball sack of Texas. Who wants to travel to a sweaty sack for food? Not I!
Raleigh, seems like it’s going to be rough with the selection. On a visit a few years ago, we ask a local where we can get some good Carolina BBQ. They responded with Red, Hot, and Blue! I’ve enjoyed some of the finest BBQ Texas has to offer, and this guy tries to send us to a corporate BBQ chain. It’s like asking who makes the best burgers in town, then they direct you over to McDonalds! Crikey. Fortunately, Raleigh is growing fairly quickly. With more outsiders moving in, hopefully some unique restaurants stop popping up. If not, I may have to open a Dim Sum/Indian/TexMex/BBQ/Thai all-in-one place.
Here is the list. Like I said, most of it is food.
-Alamo Drafthouse
-Chuys
-Rudy’s BBQ
-Salt Lick BBQ
-Amy’s Ice Cream
-Phil’s Ice House
-Juan in a Million
-Clay Pit
-East Side Cafe
-Kerby Lane
-Cooper’s BBQ
-Wahoo’s Fish Tacos
-Vietnamese Place - No particular one
-Visit the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue
-Might Fine Burgers
-Tubing down the Guadalupe
-Barton Springs Natural Spring
-Shanghai Chinese and Dim Sum
I’m sure I am missing something. But I will add it as I remember it. I will also mark them off as I knock ‘em out.
I’m hungry now.
